Finally, a place to work out my crazy experiments, keep my bubbling test tubes and chill out in my lab coat. The laboratory. Secretly just a place to keep track of my side projects. The idea for the lab – originally called the playground – was born a while ago, when I was working on the first project you can see in there. I wanted a separate space on my site to keep logs, pictures and videos of the progress. “Why not just put those projects in your portfolio?” you [...]

Those of you who visit the same internet communities as I do (in particular Encide and GUIStation) probably have seen this evolve from the first photoshop concepts. Those of you who follow me on Twitter, deviantART or have viewed my portfolio page recently have seen the full version already. I’m talking about my new skin for the Xion media player I released just two weeks ago: Blight. The development of this particular skin has been very, very slow. Would you believe that I made the original sketch of this design [...]

Christmas is officially over, or at least where I live. It sounds strange to me to still wish you a merry Christmas, so I just hope that all of you had a nice one. I know my Christmas eve couldn’t have been better, spending some quality time with my lovely girlfriend. On this side of the pond we don’t celebrate it with presents, because we have Sinterklaas for that. So Christmas is all about family for me, being with the ones you love. It’s nice to be together for once, [...]

In January last year, there was a program on Dutch television called Top Gun Holland. In the program they followed students of the Dutch military flight academy, from first to last year. I watched the program almost every week, because a friend of my brother was in it (he’s in training to fly chinook helicopters). About two thousand aspiring pilots signed up, but only less than 70 get through first days of selection. But the selection continues, with physical and mental test, such as withstanding 5 g’s. 30 Students continued, [...]

I’d like to start by saying that I’m usually not the person to publicly accuse others. The days of the pillory are over. However, I’m at my wits’ end, I really don’t know what to do anymore. So I’m writing this blog post as some sort of last resort. I believe art theft (or ripping, as some call it) is something every artist, whether they’re a professional or amateur, will have to deal with at least once in their carreer. Especially sites like deviantART make it easy to simply copy [...]

I’m currently developing the second Xion skin I will release (codename ‘Blight’). And, as probably every other artist on this planet, I want this piece to be the best I can. Aside from visual beauty, I ofcourse also want it to be functional. That’s the whole point of media player skins, isn’t it? People have to actually use them. Therefore, I was wondering what you, the user, look for in a media player skin. Whether it be for Xion, Winamp, Windows Media Player or any other player out there. Are [...]

Some of you might have noticed that JellePingen.com was down the day before yesterday. There was a little message instead: “Scheduled maintenace, check back later”. However, the maintenance wasn’t scheduled. And I didn’t put up that message either. Here is what happened: I got home late that night, and I saw that an update was available for the Contact Form plugin I’m using. So I hit the ‘update’ button, and wait ’till it’s done. It never finished loading. WordPress automatically displayed the maintenance message, and I couldn’t even acces the [...]

Finally. After months of sketching, designing, coding, bug testing and fixing things up for IE, I can happily say JellePingen.com is ready for launch. It all started in February 2010, when I got tired of the name of my previous portfolio. I decided to go for something a bit more personal, so I registered JellePingen.com. It took another month or two before I got a design I was satisfied with. Designing for yourself is still one of the most difficult things to do in my opinion, I am my hardest [...]
